Ubuntu 8.04 would be Ubuntu’s next long term support (LTS) edition

The developers behind the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution has said that they would be coming out with the next long term support (LTS) edition of the popular Linux distribution in April 2008.

This would be the Ubuntu 8.04 edition. The name of the edition of the Ubuntu Linux OS is based on the month and year of the launch.

This product announcement was made by Mark Shuttleworth who was addressing the media and public at the Ubuntu Live conference in Portland, Oregon.

The LTS versions of Ubuntu are different from the regular releases which are made usually after six months. The next regular launch is expected to be done in October this year which would be Ubuntu 7.10.

The LTS versions are supported for a longer time period which is the reason why they are popular amongst business customers. The most recent LTS release was Ubuntu 6.06.
