Podloso: Virus developed for the Linux powered Apple iPods

Researchers at security firm Kaspersky Lab have developed a prototype virus which can infect the iPods which are running the Linux operating system. Regular iPods are of course safe from such malicious code.

Not many iPod owners run the Linux operating system on their iPods. Kaspersky’s demo virus is named Podloso and the company confirms that it does not present a real threat.

However, the company states that it just talks about the possibility that viruses can be created which infects the portable digital media players.

The developers further added that the virus they created is not very smart. It does not auto replicate to other devices attached to the device. Users would technically have to copy it themselves which makes it a non practical approach.

Ron O’Brien, senior security analyst at security firm Sophos had this to say: “People tend to forget any type of mobile device can contain malware, even the USB you got at a trade show. Users tend to see them just as a storage device, and plug them in without scanning for malware.”
