Yahoo! acquires Del.icio.us

After Flickr, search engine giant Yahoo! acquires another biggie in Del.icio.us. Del.icio.us is a very popular bookmark sharing service enabling the users to exchange links with other users. Joshua Schachter, the founder of Del.icio.us has confirmed the news with a posting on the service’s website.

Yahoo! also has confirmed that they completed the deal on Friday. However, the financial details about this deal have not been disclosed. Schachter said about his startup to a media group: “We are joining forces to build my vision of creating a way for people to remember things together. It is a shared memory site.”

Del.icio.us has become one of the popular services to let users share and categorize their bookmarks and favorite links to discuss with other users. Another popular site providing similar functionality is Digg.com and it would be interesting to see if this one is acquired by one of the internet giants as well.

Del.icio.us impressively is run by a group of just nine employees. And some of the backers of this project happen to be biggies like Union Square Capital, Amazon.com, and BV Capital. The site has more than 300,000 registered members.
