McAfee sees future in applications for mobiles
With Microsoft planning to enter the security application market and a beta of its Windows OneCare Live coming out in the near future, it means that the existing players in the market would have to look towards a broader spectrum to make sure they do not lose out on their market share. McAfee is one such biggie and a well-known name in the Anti-Virus applications market and they have plans to go big time for developing applications for mobile phones.
The company on Tuesday said that they are on their way to sign on several deals in coming months with mobile-device makers with focus towards making antivirus solutions for their products. McAfee President Gene Hodges was addressing the investors at the RBC Capital Markets conference in San Francisco. Mobiles have become the latest targets for hackers and virus writers as they are increasingly being used by surfers to connect to Internet.
The company however declined to name any of the prospective companies they are undergoing talks with. They are already in collaboration with Japan’s top mobile-phone operator NTT DoCoMo Inc. and provide their products for around 9 million handsets. This number is bound to increase to almost 40 millions by the end of next year as per estimates by McAfee.
Hodges even went to the extent of saying that McAfee sees a market for 2 billion mobile devices by the end of 2008.
