Firefox Extensions from Google

Google guys seem to have been impressed by the way, Firefox coding is done. This is quite apparent from the Blog post about the newly launched Google Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox. Google team says: “For a small team that had never worked together or used XUL, to create a product quickly that works across languages and platforms from a single ~250K download - that’s good stuff, if you ask me”.

As a result, we now have more than just the Google Toolbar for Firefox as they have also released two more extensions, which bring amazing Google functionality to the Mozilla Firefox browser. Google Toolbar already is a pretty good implementation of the Google Toolbar, which has been available for the Internet Explorer for quite sometime. The latest extensions bring the functionalities of Google Suggest and Google Messaging services to the Firefox interface.

Google Send to Phone: this extension from Google enables the user to send short text messages to mobile phones. This service currently works only in the United States and is useful in sending someone snippets of information or important numbers.

Google Suggest for Firefox: this one is actually quite impressive. It integrates the functionality of the Google Suggest Beta website to the regular search box already present in the Mozilla Firefox browser. As a result while making a fresh search in Firefox; the browser would give users possible options depending upon the characters he has already typed.

Overall, it is good to see a major corporation showing so much interest in an Open Source application. It also goes on to show the kind of coding independence Mozilla has on offer to the software application developers. Now, we expect to see Google staying at least up-to-date with their software offerings for Internet Explorer along with Mozilla Firefox.

As I recall Opera included something like Google Suggest in 7.1x TP 2 or so, but was forced by Google to remove it… hopefully we’ll regain that feature with Opera 8.02 then! :)

The web spelling addition to Google’s Tool bar is excellent. I use all the time just make sure that no “typos” are overseen. It’s fast and very intuitive to use.

It is as good as the spelling option in Mozilla’s Thunderbird e-mail software and a lot better than Yahoo’s e-mail’s speller.

    Good work Google,
