Apple iTunes as popular as P2P applications

This news is going to come as a big surprise for the MPAA and RIAA. Research has concluded that Apple’s digital music download store iTunes is as popular if not more than most of the P2P applications out there. This means that legitimate ways of downloading songs is somehow managed to reach the levels of download digital content illegally.

The survey was conducted by NPD Group and as per the results; WinMX was the most popular utility on the net to download digital content. It was being used by almost 2.1 million users. Second in the survey were LimeWire and surprise surprise Apple iTunes with around 1.7 million users on the net.

Russ Crupnick, president of the NPD Group’s music and movies division said in a statement: “One of the music industry’s questions has been, when will paid download stores compete head-to-head with free P2P download services? That question has now been answered. iTunes is more popular than nearly any P2P service.”

In fact, Apple iTunes has been ranked inside the top 10 music download services available around on the net and it is ahead of the popular applications like Kazaa and BearShare. Overall, it is an indication that if the service is good, people would pay for it.
