Microsoft Windows 2003 receives first Service Pack
Microsoft’s Operating System updates are synonymous with Service Packs, which often comes with collections of hundreds of patches, rather than feature updates. Some of the Operating Systems have received as many as four Service Updates during their lifetime. And the latest one to receive its first of the series is Windows Server 2003, which now has its own SP1 update from the software giant.
It was released on Wednesday for the user community to download from the Microsoft’s website. It has been two years now that the server OS was released to the public. The company is also releasing the code including security enhancements and some reliability and performance improvements.
The company claims that besides making security updates to make the Operating System more secure, they have also done some changes to some root core behaviors in the operating system that will potentially allow classes of exploits to be eliminated rather than just an individual one that had a patch. All these steps are planned to make the software less vulnerable to the security threats emerging from the Internet in the recent years.
This service pack is also the first one from the company to have undergone rigorous screening and audit for potential security issues and other vulnerabilities via a process called Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing initiative. This should ensure that the upgrade to this update should be trouble free for the massive user base of this network orientated Operating System.

That’s an understatment. Micro$oft has 6 service packs alone for WinNT plus “roll-ups”. See: http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/sp7.asp
Or better yet, just avoid the mess to begin with and go Linux. May I recommend Debian?
