What made Microsoft enter the PC Security Application Market?
Microsoft finally decided to enter the market that has been practically originated from them. Popularity of Microsoft applications meant more and more security glitches are found and code to take advantage of them are developed and released in wild by virus developers. Until now, Microsoft provided support to its business partners like McAfee and Symantec who developed security applications for Microsoft Operating Systems.
One of the major reasons for Microsoft entering the field besides the fact that the security applications market has become quite lucrative is that they were probably alienating their customers who had to rely upon third party applications to make Microsoft Applications secure. The problems with this step are many… they already are in so many markets that most of the fields where Microsoft entered in the last couple of years, their products have been found to be substandard when compared to the competition.
Another problem is their business relation with the existing business partners in the security market. They provide technical support to companies, which now become their competitor in this market. Bill Gates announced that Microsoft would soon be releasing Anti-Virus solutions for both home and corporate users, which directly conflicts with the interests of many big companies involved in this business.
Executives in the security industry are hopeful that the company would keep the promise to continue sharing security information and working with other security companies even after it becomes a direct competitor. Other analysts say that Microsoft should instead worry about releasing products, which does not require the help of these security add-ons!
