Firefox keeps eroding Internet Explorer market share

While the software giant Microsoft concentrates on the search engine and webmail market to counter Google and GMail, it is being heavily knocked in the browser market. Though, it would take years for the market share of Microsoft Internet Explorer to reach critically low levels, they would definitely be surprised to see how quickly the web is taking on to the alternative browsers. Especially Firefox

The latest stats released yesterday through an online study showed the expected trends. Firefox browser gained around 0.88% market to reach 4.78% market share. Not as exciting but considering the browser is hardly 3 months old, things are only going to get better. IE usage declined by around 0.7%.

WebSideStory, the company tracking this browsing behavior by embedding sensors on major web sites monitored around 30 million Internet users a day. It later took a snapshot of two days and compares the growth. The recent trends have shown that online users have started moving from Internet Explorer after many government agencies recommended them to do so. Bugs and security bugs are a pretty regular feature in this heavily used application. The emergence of the Open Source Community developed Firefox threw fuel in this fire.

Mozilla Foundation has reported millions of copies of Firefox downloaded ever since the first final version was launched. Other browser like Opera and Safari also gain from this shifting as users find themselves spending more and more time on fixing Internet Explorer than do productive work.

Opera is frever forgotten when the subject of browser competition comes up. Having used it for several years now, and compared with IE and Moz/FF, I don’t see myself switching any time soon.
