Microsoft Office Outlook Live offering Outlook Hotmail combo

Microsoft is feeling the pinch of Google’s Webmail service GMail. We saw it from the way MSN Hotmail was upgraded from a puny two Megs to 250 Megs and the way Microsoft is now promoting Hotmail with their flagship mailing application MS Outlook. Google’s GMail has an excellent webmail interface with capabilities and speeds, which puts many offline applications to shame.

The latest news in from Microsoft is that they would now be offering a subscription service, which would tightly bring together MSN Hotmail and MS Outlook. These two products will be integrated with each other for customers looking for a combined subscription based module. This new offering has been labeled ‘Microsoft Office Outlook Live’ and comes for USD 59.95 for a year.

The interesting part of this deal is that users do not need to own MS Outlook for this package. Microsoft is offering the excellent PIM software on subscription bases. The package includes Office Outlook 2003 along with 2 GB of online storage combined with features like spam and virus protection. Users will also be able to send mails as big as 20megs through this deal.

Outlook will hence function as a front-end of MSN Hotmail and users would be able to use it for not only mail purposes but also the calendar and contact manager. These changes will be synchronized with the online servers so that users can get access to their mail through the webmail interface from anywhere.

Microsoft for the time being is offering this deal only in U.S., the U.K., and Canada. If it turns out to be successful, other countries might also get the offering. The big advantage with Microsoft compared to its competition in Yahoo! and Google is that Outlook is a well-recognized application with which a lot of potential users are already accustomed to. However, when free webmail is offering as much as Microsoft is charging you for… They just might find it hard to sell it to non-corporate users.

As long as Google keeps POP on GMail free, I find little usage for this paid module considering many excellent free mail clients are available online like Mozilla Thunderbird. With Chandler in the making, Microsoft has more headaches in the pipeline.

Hotmail’s 250megabyte inbox is only for north american continent and not for Asia. Why the discrimination? Asians have got better choices than 2.5MB which hotmail offers right now!

The choose something else! They have to start somewhere…why not in their home country? After all, Microsoft is a US co.

the 250Mb mailbox is not ONLY available for North American users. U.K users have this privlege too.
Maybe the there is an upgrade to the Asian customers in the pipeline.
Anyway Hotmail isn’t that great, I have rsigned myself to using my Hotmail account as a collection point for Junk Mail ;)

Nexus must be a yank. Typical yankee comment with single track mind thinking me, me, me (US,US,US).

    Given that:
Outlook is riddled with security holes

    and

Hotmail accounts have been cracked in the past (and will be in the future)

WHY would anyone trust Microsoft with their data and pay for the privelege too.

I’ve got a scratch yahoo account, a Gmail account but everything is also kept offline, and nothing personal is stored on anyone else’s server.

personally speaking I think hotmail isnâ??t too bad, speaking from the uk (yes im in the privileged bracket) ok I admit hotmail is riddled with holes but what do u expect for a free web-based email that you can access from where ever you are?! You pay for what you get!!!!!!!

Actually Australia has the 250 MB also, they are going to make it so everyone does eventually

what a bunch of dicks. ohhh.micosoft are evil, asians are being unfairly treated, dont trust microsoft with your data, and as for coolio “Typical yankee comment with single track mind thinking me, me, me(US,US,US)” get a life you creep. Microsoft are a US company. They are listed on the US stockmarket, they have US Stock holders-reasonable to say their first responsibility is to these people-US people. And if you want secure email- pay for it. Do you really think your email/data is any more secure on gmail then say- yahoo or hotmail or lycos mail?
If you dont like hotmail- go use something else. Microsoft really dont mind!

I discovered Gmail and have since closed my hotmail account - too little space, massive flashing popup adverts, unnatractive and cluttered interface - whereas Gmail is clean, tidy, and has some great features. 1 gb of space is useful, and the features like grouping conversations and dropdown names when you type and email address are fantastic.
