Yahoo’s latest version of its messenger program literally kicks MSN Messengers out of the window for me. It has everything that MSN Messenger has to offer and more. MSN has funky skins? Yahoo has them now. MSN has user pictures? Yahoo has them now. MSN does animated smilies? Yahoo been doing them since ages afaik! And what Yahoo! Messenger has that MSN Messenger does not? Offline messages, chatrooms ( MSN no longer has free chatrooms), custom status messages and so on. Hell, MSN Messenger doesn’t even allow you to have archives of the conversations for too long. Sometime back it told me to start a new archive file for a friend whom I talked pretty regularly. Apparently the size of the original XML was becoming too big for comfort for MSN. Yahoo on the other hand has kept archives for me since almost a year with no apparent problems. Yahoo has a version for Linux (sucks compared to Windows version), MSN Messenger does not. This list can go on and on and on.

The new version adds more such exclusive features to Yahoo! Messenger. They have introduced stealth mode. This enable you to decide who on your messenger list can see you and who cannot. Totally awesome. So they removed one of the shortcomings in my opinion. As MSN Messenger let you block a particular user even without removing him from your buddy list, yahoo did not. Now you don’t have to block anyone (so you don’t miss any offline messages), you just disappear under the stealth mode.

Yahoo! Messenger 6 Edition Stealth Mode

The new skins though feel blah at first look but grow on you. I am pretty sure I will revert back to the original windows skin in 2-3 days or better return back to Gaim. But it sure make the messenger look hip for people who don’t know how to apply custom themes in there windows environment (especially Windows XP).

They have added new smilies (I am waiting for the new hidden ones!) and animated quiet a few old ones. Yahoo! Messenger’s smilies have always been my favorite and new ones are damn pretty too! Animated smilies just make you smile when you first have a look at them.

I totally recommend giving the new version a go. Though the only disadvantages I found in the latest version are; The new skins can be sluggish on slow computers. I can live with that!

Y do some dumb chaps ask for someone to SEND THEM Yahoo 6 or other software? No one has the time to send around files. Moreover, it’s highly risky and you’ll just end up with some trojan or virus one day… Go and download it like the others do. And if there’s a problem, write to Yahoo customer care, or ask us. Don’t ask for the files!!

Hey sushubh of course there is a linux version of msn and it is available on http://www.mess.be its not made by microsoft but there is a version for linux out there maybe next time you should get your info correct before posting such a blasphemous statement eh! and also of course microsoft don’t make a linux version linux and unix are microsofts competition DAH!

  13. Sushubh | June 19th, 2004 at 09:05 am

yahoo makes the Linux version themselves. my article was referring to official versions. if i were to look for other products that let you access msn messenger, well then their is Gaim which I use when I am on Linux.

    Here is my original statement:

Yahoo has a version for Linux (sucks compared to Windows version), MSN Messenger does not.

as for competition, Mac is a competition too. But MS makes loads of applications for Mac platform, including the messenger and office… maybe you need to get your facts rights.

I agree with the article but I can tell you strait away why i do not use yahoo messenger.

I am behind a cooporate lan and yahoo simply does not work. I am a beta user of messenger live and I can tell you that most of the features you talk about are available in messenger live and It’s not block by my firewall in my university :)

They also added a great feature called live contacts that will allow you to change you details and have them automatically updated in your fiends list. And this is something yahoo client does not have :)
