Norton 360 to take on Windows Live OneCare and McAfee Falcon
The security application market is getting interesting now. With the entry of the biggest software company of world Microsoft, the market seems to be in for a total overhaul. Microsoft has already launched their Windows Live OneCare product which they claim provide all the protection that its Windows XP and Vista users are likely to need and both Symantec and McAfee have announced their own versions of Subscription based security packages.
Symantec has been working on a product named Genesis and they have now officially named this service Norton 360. McAfee on their part are working on a product named Falcon and both of these products would take on Microsoft’s Live OneCare.
Symantec’s Norton 360 would include online identity theft protection, backup and PC tune-up capabilities. It’s part of the company’s Security 2.0 vision aimed at providing the next generation of online security.
Market experts believe that both Symantec and McAfee would survive in this market despite the entry of the developers of the Windows Operating System. Charles Sharland, CEO of UK-based security vendor Appsense said in a statement: “I think Symantec are well ahead of Microsoft in security technology. It’s their area of specialty while Microsoft have got so many other things to worry about.â€
He added: “The threats are becoming more increasingly sophisticated these days so you need to have someone protecting you who is constantly keeping ahead of the game.”
Symantec is likely to launch their Norton 360 application by the end of the year just in time for the launch of the Windows Vista operating system. It would come with worldwide availability in multiple languages and countries. Symantec is expected to support both XP and Vista fully as these are going to power a majority of desktops in the coming years.
