Google Scribe: eType has a challenger!

Google has a new service in their Labs section. It’s named Google Scribe.

We have already seen the app named eType which is designed to make typing easy.

Google Scribe is a cloud based service that works inside the browser. You can use it through a bookmarklet as well.

Google Scribe: eType has a challenger!

The basic idea is that the service makes use of vast amount of data indexed and processed by Google to suggest words and phrases that you might be interested in writing. Suggestions are based on what you have already typed and how you are progressing.

You get suggestions through a drop-down box and you can easily pick the correct one. If you do not like any of the suggested phrases, you can continue to type for it to process further.

We played around with the service. We think it is incredibly powerful but does not help out if you are fast at typing.

This feature is only going to get better with time and we believe it can become as useful as their Google Transliteration project!

No doubt that the mobile platforms are tempting and much more buzzy... we still believe that for most people who find it hard to write in English and need help, eType is a great free software to use.

The discussion is not complete without A.I.type!

A.I.type works everywhere (text editors, browsers, instant messaging software etc.), it is fully aware of the writing context and therefore very accurate in prediction (it saves about 75% of your typing).

You may try the PC Beta (register at www.aitype.com). There's also an Android Alpha version - soon to become Beta and get uploaded to the market.

Hi,

I'm Daniel the founder of eType.

Just wanted to say thanks for the mention and let you know that Google seems to be targeting a different market (browser base) while we allow eType to work everywhere on the windows platform.

We welcome the competition, I'm mean come'on it's google after all :), but we are focused on simply making a great product for our users.

Tx,

D

You are right though eType does work inside the browser.

And Google Scribe can be made to work outside the browser.

There is already a keyboard for the Android platform that uses the Google Scribe platform!

This sucks. This can put lesser used words into obscurity or even put writing skills into jeopardy.

eType had challengers for a loooong time: LetmeType and PhraseExpress.
