Ping.fm gained some new users unintentionally!

A lot of folks who searched for the new Ping social network from Apple are going to be confused and probably furious.

Apparently, Ping.fm gained a lot of new users who landed on their service searching for the Apple iTunes Ping edition.

Seesmic CEO Loic Le Meur has reported that they received a record number of new registrations after Apple launched Ping. Seesmic owns Ping.fm.

Incidentally, Ping is not a web based service and cannot be operated from inside a browser.

Users have to upgrade their iTunes installation to access Ping. Something that you cannot do on Linux.

Apple probably hates Linux so much that they intentionally integrated Ping in iTunes to block Linux users. Just kidding of course.

If they had launched a web based edition, it could have become a very solid challenger to Facebook. They still can do that in the future!
