Nokia looks at open source community for their browser
Mobile phone maker Nokia has announced that they are releasing the source code of their mobile web browser. This would help the company, as they would be able to get contributions from the open source community.
The company is also hoping that this step would help standardizing the web browser development for the mobile platform, as competitors would be able to customize this product for their platforms.
Nokia primarily developed this browser for their S60 line of phones using the same engine, which Apple uses for their Safari web browser. Lee Epting, vice president of Forum Nokia said on this new initiative: “We want to reduce the fragmentation currently in place in mobile browsing.â€
This browser application is based on WebCore and JavaScriptCore components of Apple’s Safari browser and would ship with all S60 devices in the future. They also use the Opera mobile web browser on some of its mobile phones.
This open source project can be accessed through the WebKit Open Source Project.
