Symantec might develop a challenger to Microsoft Live Drive and Google GDrive

Symantec’s chairperson and chief executive officer John Thompson has said in a statement that the company is considering entering the market of providing an online storage drive similar in concept to what many other players are developing.

The aim is to provide an online location to let the consumers take backups of important files for future usage. They are working on a similar service to support their upcoming Genesis security and PC-tuning service.

With both Microsoft and Google planning to offer this service, Symantec too might offer this facility as a standalone service. Microsoft was also the first one out with the idea of integrating backup, PC tuning, and security features into one single online service. Now many more security application developers like Symantec, McAfee are following with similar services.

Symantec is scheduled to release a beta version of Genesis by the end of September. The final product is expected to be launched by the end of the year.
