Oh boy, GMail worked in Opera finally…

Buggy but functional

Ever since the release of Opera Browser 7.6 Preview Release 1, there were these claims that GMail support in Opera was fixed. But I never got through. I followed the steps but GMail refused to accept my password. Today I tried again… and finally managed to get in. It was not a smooth entry as I actually saw the 200 KB or so worth code being loaded into the browser… But it did work and I finally was able to check GMail in Opera.

It is not very smooth… My left menu is all messed with Inbox coming at second last position. Pages take some time to open in comparison to Internet Explorer and Firefox. But it is usable. A major headache now solved!

Yeah, GMail are still blocking Opera though, you need to use the workaround to get in. Google seem to think that ‘block now, try and work out why later’ is better than ’say it might not work, but let them try anyway’. Oh well. Opera’s XMLHttpRequest support is new, no doubt it will be better (faster) in the final 7.6 release. And hopefully by then, Google will have pulled their heads out of the sand and stopped blocking it.

Still, a company that insists on using proprietary technology instead of using recognised techniques that have existed since NS4 & IE4 (yes, if they could be bothered to program properly, GMail could work in those too and still manage to asynchronously update), what do we expect?! I suppose we are lucky that they still use HTML to display the page instad of XAML. No doubt they will switch to that when Windows LongYawn arrives.

Opera by far, is the best browser. Firebird from mozilla is a close contender. Recently, i’ve been having a lot of problem with a file opera.dll. Opera 7.54 crashes often on a WinXP pc due to opera.dll. Reason is probably because opera.dll is packed by an exe compressor – ASPack or UPX – which overloads it’s functionality. Waiting for Opera 7.6 to impress me.
