Microsoft assures of no backdoor for Windows Vista

World’s largest software company and the developers of the most popular operating system around, Microsoft has assured their customers that Windows Vista will not have a backdoor. They are particularly referring to the new encryption feature in this much-awaited operating system, which would render data unreadable in case of theft.

Media reports had earlier suggested that the company was under pressure from governments around the world to allow backdoor access in case government agencies are required to access data on such an encrypted Windows Vista machine.

The company said in an emailed statement: “Microsoft has not and will not put ‘backdoors’ into Windows.” Thankfully, for a change Microsoft is putting user’s privacy over government’s demands. The company recently faced controversies when they revealed that they handed over MSN Search records to government agencies when demanded by the US DoJ.

Niels Ferguson, a developer and cryptographer at Microsoft talked more about this feature: “The suggestion is that we are working with governments to create a back door so that they can always access BitLocker-encrypted data. Over my dead body.”
