AOL opens up AIM for third party development
In an unusual move from the company known to be pretty close to such concepts, America Online has said that they are planning to release software toolkits for developers to begin enhancing and creating instant messaging services of their own.
The company is basically aiming to let software and service developers create their own versions of its AOL Instant Messenger. AOL has traditionally kept their IM code locked and even went to the extent of changing the protocols frequently to stop users from using third party tools from joining AOL IM network.
Market experts believe that if the company make their moves right, they could challenge the domination of MSN Messenger. Kevin Conroy, executive vice president of AOL Media Networks spoke about this new initiative: “The next wave of opportunities will come as a result of allowing developers to innovate.â€
Google is the most significant latest entry into this instant messaging market and are using an open source protocol to enable third party clients interact with their services. It looks like that the corporations are realizing the power of third party developers and tools.
