Adobe fixes critical Shockwave Install Bug

Adobe is now the new owners of the software company macromedia and they have just revealed that they have fixed a potential critical bug in the Shockwave installer. This critical vulnerability in the popular Shockwave player was disclosed earlier this week by a bug bounty program.

Adobe responded by patching the application on the same day and releasing the updated version. The bug was revealed by TippingPoint’s Zero Day Initiative, which is one of the two popular rewards currently running for paying researchers for information about software vulnerabilities.

TippingPoint warned in a statement that a malicious Web site could hijack a user’s computer if the site convinced the visitor to install Shockwave player, which is very popular for watching multimedia content on a website. The company said that the vulnerability lies in the installer of this plug-in.

Adobe said in a statement that since the flaw lied in the installer of the application, no user has to take any action.
