Windows OS overtakes Unix in Server market

As per incoming reports Microsoft Windows operating system has just managed to bump Unix based operating systems in 2005 to claim the top spot in server sales for the first time. The statistics were revealed by market research company IDC.

The report released by IDC claims that PC manufacturers sold $17.7 billion worth of Windows servers worldwide in 2005 compared with $17.5 billion in Unix servers. IDC analyst Matthew Eastwood added his views on this achievement of Microsoft: “It’s the first time Unix was not top overall since before the Tracker started in 1996.”

Linux based operating systems came at third place as it overtook the previously placed server OS z/OS from US based tech giants IBM. Linux saw sales growing from $4.3 billion in 2004 to $5.3 billion in 2005.

Market analysts had earlier predicted that Windows OS was expected to top the market pretty soon but it got delayed due to several factors primary of which was the slow progress of the maturing of the Windows Server OS to become the top choice operating system for server administrators.

IBM however managed to stay on top in terms of sales by a PC manufacturer. The company saw sales of $16.9 billion with a market share of 32.9 percent.
