Google admits to risk posed by Google Desktop 3

Search engine giant Google has always stayed in controversies surrounding privacy of their users. The problem was magnified when the company recently launched the latest edition of their Desktop Search utility, which enables the users to upload their desktop search index on Google’s servers for usage from multiple locations.

This means that a person can search for content available on multiple computers from a central location. This caused problems for corporate users as it could lead to possible security issues. Even analysts Gartner have issued a serious warning for companies telling them to take extra precautions with this new version.

Google itself has now admitted to media companies that they are aware of the potential risk posed by the latest edition of Google Desktop. The company said in a statement to ZDNet group: “We recognize that this is a big issue for enterprise. Yes, it’s a risk, and we understand that businesses may be concerned.”

The company further said: “Theoretically any intellectual property can be transferred outside of a company. We understand that there are a lot of security concerns about the Search Across Computers feature, but Google won’t hold information unless the user or enterprise opts in.”

The company has plans to update the enterprise edition of Google Desktop search with these new features, which would enable the network administrators to control the freedom provided to the users on the network. That should solve many problems for the corporate users. However, the job of the network administrators has just become a lot more complicated. If they don’t stay up-to-date, they take the risk of losing classified information to third party sources.
