Google Voice can now be used with an existing number

Google Voice is currently available to limited number of beta testers in the US market.

One of the biggest problems using this service was that the testers were forced to use a new contact number.

Google has now fixed that problem and members of the service can now use Google Voice with any of their existing numbers.

Google said:

But we know not everyone wants to switch to a new phone number, so it made sense for us to create a lighter version of Google Voice for people who are willing to trade some features for the ability to use their existing numbers.
