Oracle asked to sell MySQL

Open Source activist Richard Stallman has called on Oracle to sell MySQL which they are gaining as part of their acquisition of Sun Microsystems.

Richard Stallman along with Knowledge Ecology International and Open Rights Group have asked the European Commission to force Oracle to sell this open source database product before they are allowed to acquire Sun Microsystems.

Stallman had this to say in his statement: “If Oracle is allowed to acquire MySQL, it will predictably limit the development of the functionality and performance of the MySQL software platform, leading to profound harm to those who use MySQL software to power applications.”

MySQL is one of the most popular open source rival to Oracle Database solutions.

Stallman added: “We recognize that Oracle’s acquisition of Sun may be essential for Sun’s survival. However, Oracle should not be allowed to harm consumer interests in the database market by weakening the competition provided by MySQL.”
