Twitter on mobile in Japanese

Twitter has launched a new mobile edition of their service for users in Japan.

Japanese is now the only language supported by Twitter along with English.

The company has already stated that they are working on adding support for more languages in the near future. Spanish, German, French and Italian language editions are already in development.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone spoke about this new development: “It’s an excellent opportunity for us to see where we can go in Asia in general because Japan represents a leading edge, with advanced mobile usage. Mobile is in Twitter’s DNA.”

Reports about this are mentioning that between January and June this year almost a million people have signed up for Twitter in Japan – well guess what? This new version screws us – we can no longer access the old twitter.com but are force-redirected to the Japanese beta version which does not recognize our original accounts or anyone using Twitter in English.
I praise the idea of Twitter accepting different languages but what this actually does is cut off Japan from the rest of the twittering world. Will they do the same to Europe?

Why not offer the original version with Japanese language support or give us the choice of whether we want to be involved with the world or have to use some isolationist, zenophobic Japan only version.
