Oracle considering acquiring open source companies
Database software market giants Oracle is rumored to be considering acquiring at least three different open source based companies in order to improve their subscriber-based model services.
The company plans to use these open source applications for generating revenues through support and maintenance. These deals can be valued at around USD 600 million and would add to the recent buying spree, which has seen Oracle spending billions of dollars. Oracle recently acquired rivals like PeopleSoft and Siebel Systems.
If the deals are completed, it would see company in control of some of the most sought-after open-source projects. These three companies are said to be JBoss, Zend, and Sleepycat Software. None of these involved companies has commented on these market rumors.
Oracle Chief Executive Larry Ellison had recently mentioned in a statement: “We are moving aggressively into open source. We are embracing it. We are not going to fight this trend. We think if we’re clever, we can make it work to our advantage.” Looks like they have a strategy to achieve exactly that.
