Google Toolbar 4 coming up today

Search engine giants Google are expected to launch their next version of the browser add-on, Google Toolbar (version 4) sometime today. Sundar Pichai, Google’s project manager for client software said in a statement on this latest version: “The major direction we have taken with this version is empowering users to really personalize, configure, and customize the toolbar to the way they’d like it to be.”

The company said that this update brings four new capabilities to this browser add-on: custom buttons, centralized bookmarks, enhanced search, and Send To. The custom buttons would enable web developers to let their visitors pick up custom search services or data sources like RSS feeds from their websites.

Google is making available API instructions for the web developers to let them generate their own codes for embedding in websites. They expect this new feature to improve user interaction with a website.

The second add-on is something Google’s competitors have offered since a long time. Google Toolbar would now enable the users to access bookmarks through their Google accounts from any computer. This makes it easier for them to save their bookmarks at a centralized location without any fear of losing them.

The toolbar’s enhanced searching feature enables it to now suggest terms from popular searches and the user’s search history as the user types. This works on the Google Suggest phenomena and would be helpful for novice users. The Send To feature is also something other toolbars have offered since a long time. It enables the user to send the current visited website’s link to their friends and relatives through E-mail or text messaging.

Google is now also adding a new custom version for the Enterprise Customers. It interact with the Windows Group Policies to enable IT administrators control the features on the toolbar from a centralized location. They can also add on new buttons (using the Custom Button) feature letting them making this application a valuable information broadcaster inside an intranet!

This version for the time being would only be available for Internet Explorer 6 web browser. However, an updated version for the Mozilla Firefox is in plan and should be out in the near future.
