Netscape updates Netscape Browser

America Online has updated their Netscape web browser with new features. This update also brings the latest Mozilla Firefox rendering engine to this browser, which was once the most popular web browser on the net but has lost most of its market share to competitors like Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.

The new update brings new features like anti-spyware tool and support for RSS. Netscape 8.1 is a freely downloadable browser application from the AOL website. The browser application would now scans all downloads conducted via the browser and blocks suspicious files.

The latest version also comes with an updated security center and displays status indicators that show the browser’s current settings for defensive measures against phishing and popup ads. It also alerts the user if he has enabled automatic updates for the browser or not. The application features auto update facility, which enables the user to stay up-to-date with latest security and stability updates.

Netscape now also supports RSS feeds and brings better performance and other security updates to this latest fix. We at TechWhack download and installed the latest version and found it to be snappier than the previous versions. However, the company no longer supports alternative platforms like Linux and Mac OS X, which is a big disappointment.

It runs fine. But do not install it over 8.0.4. I did that and it ran like a rat. Save out your bookmarks to a temporary file. Uninstall any previous versions and your profile, even though it means re-doing your passcards, and re-importing your bookmarks. And if you have decent antivirus, antispyware, anti-adware installations, and a good firewall configure Netscape to do as little security as possible. They are killing the flea with an elephant gun.
