Google Maps relying on us to show traffic data

Google has announced that they are adding a new feature to Google Maps which would display traffic data on side streets.

Google is relying on data provided by the users of the service on their smartphones for this new functionality.

Users are being asked to support the feature by letting the device send Google updates on their location.

Google collects the data and estimates the speed of the user. This helps them to display the traffic situation of your locality.

It is an interesting concept which becomes more accurate with more users joining the movement.

Palm Pre and MyTouch 3G are two of the many devices which support this functionality automatically. Apple iPhone is not supported as the default Map application is provided by Apple and not Google.
