Twitter working on location based API

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has blogged that the company is now working on providing a location based API which would enable users of the service to pinpoint their locations while tweeting.

Stone said that this new functionality would enable users to send their location with each of their Tweets.

The feature would be off by default because of the privacy related concerns.

They are also not going to store the location data for longer periods.

This new functionality could lead to interesting new functionalities on the service. Users would be able to see tweets from people who are in a particular city or even in their locality.

Stone added:

We’re going to release geolocation to platform developers before we add the feature to Twitter.com. Most of the mobile applications people use and love are built by Twitter platform developers. Developers will have access to this new geolocation feature early which means it will most likely be available on your app of choice before it’s available on Twitter’s web site. Later, we’ll add it to our mobile web site and Twitter.com as well.
