Skype advertising banned from television for misleading consumers
Skype had a television ad developed by the Albion agency.
The ad showcased a dad with his newly born baby taking to the baby’s grandparents.
The problem was the high quality of transmission that is showcased in the ad.
Skype admits that they used the best possible equipment available in the market for the television ad and similar quality is not expected in regular hardware generally used by customers.
Skype said that the aim of the ad was to showcase the video conferencing feature of the software.
Advertising Standards Authority ruled: “While we understood the technology would continue to evolve and improve, we considered that viewers would infer that the sound and picture quality depicted in the ad was typical of the performance that all users could achieve.”
The ad cannot be televised again without a clear message stating that the quality of transmission would depend up various factors including broadband speeds and hardware used.
