Nambu decides to open source Tr.im

There is good news for the fans of Tr.im link shortening service.

Nambu has announced that they are going to give away the service to the online community.

They are starting the process to release the service to public domain immediately.

The aim is to get the web users interested in it to make it popular enough to compete with rivals like bit.ly.

Bit.ly is incidentally the default link shortening service used by Twitter on their network.

Tr.im further revealed that bit.ly offered them USD 10,000 for the domain and the link data but they rejected the deal.

Tr.im is now expected to become an open source offering by September 15, 2009.

Another good news is that they would allow third party domains to run their own link shortening service powered by their engine for free. Donations would be welcome of course.
