Wikipedia closing in on 3 million articles

Wikipedia has been growing at an impressive speed. It is now close to becoming home to 3 million articles.

Wikipedia was launched in 2001 and the first million articles too as long as five years.

It has gained momentum in the last couple of years and the second million articles were posted in less than 2 years time.

The third million mark has taken another two years and Wikipedia is likely to cross this milestone in the coming days.

Some experts believe that Wikipedia is losing its appeal amongst casual content providers. Ed H Chi is a scientist who has been monitoring the popular open source encyclopaedia since some time now. He said: “For a long time, the understood model for all kinds of large knowledge systems on the web was that they grow exponentially. The accepted explanation was that the rich get richer – things that receive a lot of attention end up getting a lot more attention.”

Wikipedia has become more complex than ever and it has become complicated to keep track on the thousands of changes that are made on a daily basis.
