Nambu Network to shut down TR.IM link shortening service

Sad news for all the users of tr.im link shortening service. We used it on several of our accounts so it is a major disappointment for us as well.

Tr.im has announced that they are closing down their operations. New links cannot be made. They are going to honour existing links on the web till the end of the year.

The developers said in a message on their website:

We regret that it came to this, but all of our efforts to avoid it failed.
No business we approached wanted to purchase tr.im for even a minor amount.
There is no way for us to monetize URL shortening — users won’t pay for it — and we just can’t
justify further development since Twitter has all but annointed bit.ly the market winner.
There is simply no point for us to continue operating tr.im, and pay for its upkeep.

The fact remains that it has always been very clear that link shortening services have few ways to make money. Especially when they want to play the game fairly. No user would like their shared links to be used for advertising through bars or interstitial pages. Blaming Twitter for their lack of revenue potential is a bad move from the developers of tr.im…
