eBay working on developing alternative technologies for Skype

Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom created Skype along with Joltid which provides technology used in Skype services.

The duo sold Skype to eBay in 2005 for a massive price tag of USD 2.6 billion.

eBay still licenses technology for running Skype from Joltid.

The two groups are currently involved in a legal dispute. Joltid has been trying to end their deal with eBay related to usage of their technology in Skype. They claim that Skype broke their licensing agreement.

Ebay had this to say in a regulatory filing: “If Skype was to lose the right to use the Joltid software as the result of the litigation, and if alternative software was not available, Skype would be severely and adversely affected and the continued operation of Skype’s business as currently conducted would likely not be possible.”

The company also added that they are currently developing their own technologies that can support Skype in case the legal dispute is not settled in their favour.
