Twitter cleaning up spam mess in followers count
Twitter has stated that they are in the process of updating the follower counts of all the members of their network.
The aim is to fix the incorrectness for some members. This update would remove any orphan data that was still being used to show the number of followers for an account.
This means that some users would see a drop in their number of followers.
Twitter added:
In particular, those with large followings may see significant changes as we correct for spam accounts and data inconsistencies. No legitimate followings should be affected—we’re just cleaning up artifacts in the system.

Losing the spam followers is no problem it is unfortunate however that
that I was unable to follow legitamate new followers due to the ratio
restritions edtablished by twitter. Hope nobody got their feelings hurt
