Yahoo shutting down Geocities on October 26 this year
Yahoo has now confirmed that Geocities would be closed down later this year.
The closing day is set on October 26.
Yahoo had already closed new accounts on this service. All existing sites hosted on Geocities would disappear in October.
The company is advising people hosting sites on Geocities to shift to Yahoo! Web Hosting which is of course a paid offering.
The message on the service states:
GeoCities is closing on October 26, 2009.
On October 26, 2009, your GeoCities site will no longer appear on the Web, and you will no longer be able to access your GeoCities account and files.
If you’d like to move your web site, or save the images and other files you’ve posted online, please act now by downloading your files or upgrading to Yahoo! Web Hosting.
