Google help newbies with a free Software Starter Kit

If you are new to computers and just logged on to the internet, it is harder for you to chose some of the best applications out their to get the job done. There are hundreds of options for each product category and Google is now planning to make the job easier for non-techie people using computers. The search engine giant launched a free Software Starter Kits for such Google users.

This software bundle was launched yesterday at the ongoing Consumer Trade Show in Las Vegas. And this also marks the latest offense from the search engine giant against the domination of the software market leaders Microsoft. Most of the products in this starter kits are alternatives to applications provided by Microsoft and other Google competitors.

The aim to provide such a kit is to make it easier for new web users to get the most out of their computers than more-established software makers. Marissa Mayer, Google’s vice president of search products and user experience talked about this initiative: “We thought, ‘Why can’t using a computer be more fun, simple and empowering?’” Of course, the company has started by integrating six of their own software products in this kit.

Just one of the many applications available in this pack is not free considering the Norton Antivirus included in the package comes as a free six-month trial. The company has collaborated with the developers of these non-Google applications to make the installation and maintenance of the software kit easy for the end user. Google confirmed that no money transaction has taken place between the various software developers involved in the creation of the package.

Some of the applications available in this Google Pack Beta release are:
Google Earth
Google Desktop
Picasa
Google Toolbar for Internet Explorer
Google Pack Screensaver
Mozilla Firefox with Google Toolbar
Ad-Aware SE Personal
Norton Antivirus 2005 Special Edition
Adobe Reader 7

We at TechWhack are pretty satisfied with the applications contained in this box. However, the company could have chosen a better anti-virus suite considering a lot of users have had problems dealing with Norton Antivirus application. And in addition, they also might have included excellent photo viewing software IrfanView but that would have conflicted with their own Google Picasa application.

We invite user opinions on other freeware applications Google could and can include in this package!
