Browser for the Better: Donate by downloading Internet Explorer 8

Trust Microsoft to come up with the wackiest ways to lure customers into checking out their products and services.

The company is already luring users to their product search engine with cash back offers.

And now Microsoft has launched a new project named Browser for the Better.

Browser for the Better is a new website which promotes Internet Explorer 8 web browser.

The company says that they would donate the financial equivalent of 8 meals to Feeding America’s network of 206 local food banks for every complete download of the IE8 installer.

TechCrunch has done some maths on the hilarity of this campaign.

The funny thing is that when you Google the phrase ‘Browser for the Better’, you end up getting Firefox as the top result!

Microsoft Bing however shows the proper site at the top.

Since food banks do not charge member agencies for the food they receive, and have to incur the costs of pickup, delivery, and storage of the food, the agencies give a “shared maintenance fee” usually ranging from 14-20 cents per pound. $1.15/.14 = 8pounds of food = 8 meals.
