Microsoft Morro could arrive soon

Microsoft has been a player in the security applications market for their Windows platform since quite some time now.

They launched Live OneCare service a couple of years ago which was a paid service. It came with 90 days free access for customers interested in taking it.

The service was not much successful as it failed in several tests which criticized it for not detecting or removing a lot of known viruses.

Microsoft had announced last year that they were discarding the paid model. The company is now aiming to launch a new free service later this year which has been codenamed Morro.

The software giant said that this new free service would be aimed to counter the issue of viruses, spyware, rootkits, and trojan malware on the Windows platform.

Microsoft has now said that they are pretty close to launching a public beta edition of this new product. They have completed the internal testing.

It remains to be seen if it could provide a good alternative to paid offerings from Symantec and McAfee. Or if it is capable enough to take on the free products in the market like AVG and Avast.
