Windows 7 won’t support ARM processors
Microsoft has announced that they do not plan to support ARM processors with their Windows 7 operating system.
ARM processors are used by some netbook manufacturers. It is however supported by several Linux distributions.
This announcement is bad news for ARM which was aiming to become a bigger player in the netbook market.
Intel and VIA are two other companies which provide microprocessors for these low cost computing machines.
Steve Guggenheimer, Microsoft’s corporate vice-president for original equipment manufacturers spoke about the new developments: “For people who want a PC, albeit a different chipset, we don’t think those will work very well.”
He spoke about Google Android as a possible netbook operating system: “I’m somewhat sceptical that consumers will begin running to Android right now. You’ll still want your printer to work; you’ll still want your software to work. There’s a lack of a complete ecosystem around Android.”
