Ubuntu One is the cloud for your Ubuntu OS

Canonical is now providing a proprietary cloud based storage application and service named Ubuntu One for the users of their Ubuntu operating system.

This service is currently in beta and is invitation only.

Ubuntu One is designed to enable the Ubuntu users to store and sync files online and between computers.

The service requires a desktop client that for now only works on Ubuntu 9.04. It also has a web based user interface which can work on any standard compliant web browser.

The service offers 2GB storage for free. Users can pay USD 10 a month for 10GB storage.

It remains to be seen if this service becomes popular amongst Ubuntu users. 10 USD a month for 10GB of online storage is pretty expensive compared to existing services.

I think it is a good move from Canonical as online services is the way to go to make Ubuntu economically sustainable imho.
