RealDVD can make copies of rented DVDs
RealNetworks is fighting a lawsuit filed by MPAA which claims that their RealDVD product enables the user to pirate movie DVDs.
RealDVD was launched recently and it enables the customers to make copies of a DVD on a computer’s hard drive.
Real said that they are limiting the usage of the software by limiting playback of copies to five separate machines.
The company however admitted that the application is able to make copies of DVDs which are rented or borrowed by friends.
Real said that they would need cooperation by media companies to somehow mark rental DVDs so that the software can identify them.
Real added: “If you want to steal, we remind you what the rules are and we discourage you from doing it, but we’re not your nanny.”
