Twitter has a problem with user loyalty
Twitter might be growing at an impressive pace but there is one major problem with that. Most of the new members of the service do not return after using it for a couple of days.
The growth rate is phenomenal. Twitter grew by around 1382% between February 2008 and 2009.
It continues to grow at an impressive rate especially after the recent joining of Oprah which alone resulted in a major boost in the new member registrations.
Market research firm Nielsen has now reported that almost 60% of users who sign up fail to return the following month.
The report released by the firm said: “Compare it to the two heavily-touted behemoths of social networking when they were just starting out…we found that even when Facebook and MySpace were emerging networks like Twitter is now, their retention rates were twice as high. When they went through their explosive growth phases, that retention only went up, and both sit at nearly 70 percent today.”
One of the major problems with Twitter is that it provides just one service. Facebook and MySpace are more feature rich and have tons more to offer to the web users.
