Google O3D to bring 3D technologies to web browser
Google has announced the launch of O3D project which is designed to bring accelerated 3D graphics to web browsers.
The project is hosted on Google Code.
The developers have for now provided a plug-in that works with Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome web browsers.
The plug-in supports all three popular platform Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.
Google said that the technology would enable web developers to develop code that can connect with the computer’s graphics chip providing enhanced performance.
Google said that they have been working on this technology for the last two years and they believe its time 3D content is accessible from inside the web browser.

3D content has been accessible from inside the web browser for years. Popular indie games like Off-Road Velociraptor Safari and RC Laser Warrior have used the Unity 3D technology to show amazing 3D graphics in the browser. But also huge franchises flock to Unity: Cartoon Networks even made their fullblown MMO FusionFall as a 3D in-browser game with Unity. Google’s Beach Demo even looks suspiciously similar to Unity’s vast Tropical Paradise Demo:

But it will be interesting to see where things will be going with an open source project like this! Once it has matured a bit more, it will certainly have potential.

@Rune
The least you could do is to disclose that you work for unity 3d but having said that I totally agree with you, unity 3d has been able to deliver on that field for a while already and they keep improving their engine continuously but a little bit of competition is always good and I am looking forward to see where all that goes.
