Geocities being closed down

Oldies on the web would remember web services like Geocities which enabled them to create simple websites before blogs existed on the web.

Yahoo bought the service way back in 1999 and they are now closing it down.

Geocities has lost its charm with cheap web hosting services available online. A lot of people have moved on to using blogging services from these static web based services.

Web users visiting the Geocities service are now greeted with a message: “Sorry, new GeoCities accounts are no longer available.”

Existing users can still use the service but they are being told to move to Yahoo’s premium hosting services as well.

    Geocities Announcement :

    Important Announcement

After careful consideration, Yahoo! has decided to close GeoCities later this year.

You can continue enjoying your GeoCities service until then — we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We’ll share more details this summer. For now, please visit the help center for more information.

GeoCities is both a subhosting and a subbuilder. This is a monster that must not survive.
