India has around 25,000 PCs infected with Conficker

Security companies claim that the Indian market has around 25,000 personal computers which are infected with the Conficker worm.

The latest variant of the Conficker worm was supposed to become active on April 1.

This malware affects vulnerability in the Windows operating system that Microsoft has already patched.

But a lot of Windows users simply do not update their installations due to lack of knowledge or internet connectivity. Some do not update because they are using pirated copies of the OS.

Conficker spreads to other machines through buffer overflow vulnerability in the Server Service on Windows computers.

Govind Rammurthy, CEO, Micro World had this to say on this problem: “The worm has so far affected about two million PCs around the world and in India about 25, 000 PCs are affected. It has not made a big impact as expected prior to April 1, the date when the attacks started, but the threat of Conficker is real, existing and will continue to exist for some time.”
