Rupert Murdoch: Online news should not be free

News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch has practically dismissed the idea of advertising based online news services.

This means that The Wall Street Journal is unlikely to become a freely accessible news service supported with online ads.

Murdoch said: “The people are used to getting everyone on the net for nothing. That’s going to have to change somehow.”

He was speaking at the 2009 Cable Show.

He added about the WSJ: “We have no trouble in charging $60-$100 a year solely for the Web site.”

Murdoch spoke about The New York Times: “They cannot give their advertising away itself because the inventory of display adverting on the web is doubling every year, so they’re never going to make money out of it on an advertising model. I think the classifieds, though, which was their river of gold, is probably draining away and will be gone forever.”

He was also very critical of Google which continues to run its Google News relying on third party news sources.

He went on to criticize both Yahoo and Google for stealing their copyrights with their online news services.
