Microsoft collaborates with MCI to compete with Skype and Yahoo!

Skype is currently the market leaders in VoIP market and have recorded multi-million downloads of their software application. The company allows free PC-PC conversation over an internet connection and by paying a small fee; a user can call any regular telephone in supported countries. In addition, Skype also enables the user to have regular number call them on their mobile phones.

The market has become so lucrative that eBay went on to buy them at a price, which literally shocked the market. Recently, search engine giants Yahoo! announced their plan to enter the same market by enabling the users of their messenger to call regular phones in a similar way to Skype users. They have also made sure that their prices are lower than Skype to bring in more users to their services.

The latest market giant to announce their plans to follow suit is Microsoft. The company is going into a collaboration with MCI Inc. to extend the reach of MSN’s instant-messaging service into the global computer-to-phone call market. They plan to offer the services at a low price of around 2.3 cents a minute. This is lower than what MCI offers to their own customer base.

The new service would be called MCI Web Calling for Windows Live Call and users would be able to access it through Windows Live Messenger.
