Using Gmail to send emails in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, or Malayalam

Google seems to have integrated their Google Indic Transliteration capability into Gmail webmail service.

The setting seems to be on by default for users in India. If it is not, you can enable it from the General tab in Gmail settings.

This new feature enables you to send emails in local languages. Gmail currently support writing emails in five Indian languages: Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam.

You can tell Gmail to write in one of these languages by picking the option from a drop down box in the rich text toolbar in the compose window.

Along with the newly added support for local languages in Gmail Labs, this further enhances the usability of the Gmail service for non-English users.
